WHAT YOU NEED... A brief knowledge of Boscastle’s history would help you to begin your enquiries. i.e. The National Trust leaflet No. 3 - Coast of Cornwall series is a good starting point and available from the Visitor Centre. Previous drawing/painting/writing skills are helpful but not essential. Individuals will be encouraged to work at their own pace and make their own personal journeys.

WHAT TO BRING...Weather permitting, you will be working directly from the landscape, so outdoor clothing, a cushion in a plastic bag and sensible footwear is advised.

Bring whatever media you choose - watercolours, pastels, inks etc. Make sure you have a range of pencils to begin your studies. For example 2B - 6B, Conte or charcoal etc.

Ideally, bring a Sketch Book A5 - A2 or alternatively loose paper and a drawing board.

A limited supply of basic drawing tools will be available to buy from the studio.

Coloured Ingres paper comes in sketchbook form and is good to experiment with.

A digital camera is a useful way of collecting initial information. Traditional photography could also be an option for those of you able to return the following week with developed images.

HOW IT WORKS... The INTRODUCTORY DAY is every week on a Tuesday afternoon 2.00pm - 5.30pm.

The course continues on Wednesday and Thursday 2.00pm - 5.00pm.
There will be a discussion at the end of each session.

Once you have attended an INTRODUCTORY DAY you can take part on any day in future weeks to continue your studies.

‘It is given to few artists to be master or mistress also of words; and very few writers to be truly original artists. In Deborah King we appear to have an almost unique marriage of the two. Her technical ability is at times, breathtaking in its beauty and intensity.’

‘The visuals are complemented with verses, imagist in form, that are akin to verbal plumes, feathers of inspiration, compact, vivid and pertinent.’
CHOUGH PALORES

‘ Working from the landscape is a multi-layered process, a journey of discovery, an excavation. It is about being still, being able to see beyond recognition, beyond the familiar beauty and structure.

Beneath the surface, lie centuries of myth and memory, the ancient messages that connect us to the heart and soul of a place. And Boscastle, with its Iron Age fort, Celtic stitches and Medieval harbour has a long and colourful history.

Governed only by the elements, by the swings of ocean tide, it communicates at the deepest level, challenging the imagination, drawing us back again and again.’ D.K
